Stamps from the series The Red List of Lithuania
According to info got by FindYourStampsValue.com, Lithuania Post is going to release two new stamps from the series The Red List of Lithuania. The stamps feature the European mink and the otter both inscribed into the Red List of Lithuania. The new stamp was released and put into circulation on the 17th of January.
The new stamps have been created by the artist Irma Balakauskaitė. The nominal value of the stamp featuring the European mink is EUR 0.87, and the stamp featuring the otter has the nominal value of EUR 0.71. Each stamp has been issued in the edition of 300 thousand copies.
The European mink (Mustela lutreola) is a predatory mammal, member of the mustelid family. It is similar in size and appearance to the ferret or the otter. Fur of the European mink is dense, glossy, colour varies from brown to blackish-brown, and the lips and chin are pure white. The mink inhabits areas close to water bodiesand can swim and dive well. It feeds on fish, frogs, crayfish, and birds.
The otter (Lutra lutra) is a predatory mammal, member of the mustelid family. It likes torrential forest streams or lakes with nonfreezing breaks and overgrown grass. In the area where the otter inhabits, permanent burrows are found. The otter dives and swims well. It can swim underwater 400 metres without coming up for air; sometimes it can reach speed of 11–14 km/h.
