Austria Post celebrates the opening of House of Austrian History with a stamp

On 10th November 2018, on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the democratic republic of Austria, the House of Austrian History opened in the Hofburg in Vienna’s Heldenplatz. Austrian Post is congratulating it with a commemorative stamp. The item was designed by Marion Füllerer, who used the photo of the cloud taken by Thomas Albdorf. Let’s take a closer look at this original philatelic item and appreciate other stamps devoted to famous museums.

“We want to make history something that can be experienced and a place of dialogue,” says Monika Sommer, the director of the House of Austrian History, also known as hdgö (from its German name Haus der Geschichte Österreich) for short.

The House of Austrian History is the republic's first museum of contemporary history. This cultural establishment gets people acquainted with the multifaceted history of this country from the mid-19th century with a particular focus on the period from 1918 to the present day. Starting with the founding of the democratic republic in 1918, it addresses social changes and political fault lines, as well as asking questions which were of concern for Austria and Europe at that time and still are today.
