Austria Post released a special EUROPA 2021 stamp on the theme “Endangered National Wildlife”. This special item is devoted to a wolf that has appeared on the territory of Austria only recently. This animal has been considered extinct in the country since 1882. However, in 2009 the first wolves started to re-migrate. Nowadays, around thirty wolves live in the country again.
The majority of wolves live mainly in Allensteig in Lower Austria's Waldviertel region, in the Freiwald forest in the Mühlviertel region, and in the border area with the Czech Republic. Many Austrians are still afraid of wolves considering their presence in the country as a potential danger for farm animals. However, wolves have positive impacts on biodiversity, ecology, and the general health of a forest and its inhabitants. To make peaceful coexistence possible, WWF advocates for transnational wolf management and advice using herding dogs and electrified fencing to protect grazing livestock.
