Centenary of the First Crossword Puzzle stamp from Monaco

Centenary of the First Crossword Puzzle stamp from Monaco

Monaco post issued a stamp to commemorate the centenary of the first crossword puzzle.

It was Arthur Albert Wynne, a British journalist specializing in puzzles, who had the idea of including the black squares in traditional word squares and adding definitions. When the English newspapers turned down his puzzle, he sent the proposal to an American newspaper. The first crossword was published on 21st December 1913 in the New York World’s Sunday supplement, Fun and met with immediate success.
