The origins of the domestic cat date back to ancient Egypt. At that time these animals even became a status symbol. Today cats are found all over the world and have the status of pets. Domestic cats come in many different varieties, since reproduction is left to nature. Slovenia Post issued three new stamps and one miniature sheet depicting various breeds of cats.
The first stamp features a European Shorthair, which a domestic breed resulting from deliberate crossing. The coat is short, thick, and glossy. Found in a wide range of colors including single-color, multicolor, and with various striped patterns. The second stamp shows the Neva Masquerade breed that was created by crossing the Siberian cat with cats showing Siamese point coloration. They have blue eyes and the darker coloration of paws, tail, ears, and face. The Neva Masquerade is a medium to large breed with a very dense, medium-length coat.
The third item shows British Shorthair that originates from England and is the result of the deliberate crossing of domestic cat breeds. It has an extremely dense coat consisting of short, erect hair that gives it a "teddy bear" appearance. The head is round, with beautiful big round eyes and full cheekbones. They come in numerous colors, with eye color conditioned by the color of the coat. Today the British Longhair is also a recognized breed. The miniature shows the representative of one of the largest cat breeds, namely Maine Coon.
