Famous Czech inventions: sugar cube - a special stamp released!

Czech Post introduced to collectors’ attention an interesting stamp on one of the most famous Czech inventions – a sugar cube. Its creator is a Swiss-born man named Jakub Kryštof Rad, who was in charge of a sugar factory in the region. Later a Frenchman, then a Belgian, perfected his idea – which had been brought about by a coincidence. Designed by Jiří Slíva, the stamp shows a hand holding a sugar cube to sweeten a cup of coffee or tea.

The Czech Republic is not a big country, but over the course of its history it has made a big impact on the world. One of the greatest contributions made by this country is the invention of a sugar cube. The man behind this now commonplace item was Jakub Kryštof Rad. The idea to manufacture sugar cubes arose after his wife cut her hand while trying to slice up a sugar lump into small slices. In 1841 he invented a machine to manufacture sugar cubes in the city of Dacice in Moravia, where a famous monument to a sugar cube was constructed. It is a granite pedestal on which a white cube is balanced on just one corner.
