Notariat Greifensee cover is being sold for $341,000 at Corinphila!

Corinphina Auctions is going to conduct one of the greatest sales of 2021 that will take place from 25 to 30 January. This auction will offer to collectors’ attention premium philatelic material from various collections. All the material that will be presented is divided and described in eight catalogs that can be found on the website of an auction firm. The offer includes the 'Greifensee cover', which is widely regarded as the most significant cover of classical Swiss philately.

The cover is a part of a well-known ERIVAN collection, the second part of which is being sold by Corinphila at this auction. This item was sent in 1844 from Zurich to Wildberg, but despite its decent age, it boasts superior condition, whereas different registry markings prove the careful handling of the cover during transit. The auction house provided the following description about this philatelic rarity:

“Franked with Switzerland's first two stamps, the Zurich 4 and Zurich 6, it is for many the "non plus ultra" of Swiss rarities in private hands. The provenance of the item goes back to 1900 when, in the collection of the then President of the Banque de France, Paul Mirabaud, the cover caused a sensation at the Paris Exposition. It later found its way into the collections of Diem-Saxer of St. Gallen (1934), the Swiss shoe magnate Iwan Bally (1964), and then the 'HELVETICUS' collection (1991) before finding a new home in the collection of Erivan Haub for almost 30 years.”

The cover in excellent condition is being offered with a starting price of CHF 300,000 (that is roughly $341,000).
