PostNL celebrates 75th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem with a golden stamp!

The Dutch postal service, PostNL, created a stunning stamp made from gold which is issued in observance of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, also known as Operation Market Garden. It was a failed World War II military operation fought in the Netherlands from 17 to 25 September 1944. These stamps are in very short supply, so you have to be fast, if you want to get your hands on one of these.

Operation Market Garden took place on September 17th through September 26th 1944, and what was thought to be a quick operation turned into 9 days of battle, as the Allied forces faced strong opposition from the German Panzer divisions. The goal of the operation was to secure the key bridges over three wide rivers in the Netherlands (Maas/Meuse, Waal and Rhine, respectively) in order to outflank the heavy German defences of the Siegfried Line (Westwall) which protected heartland Germany beyond the Rhine. The stamp is made from 24 carat gold, and is encased in a beautiful cassette. This stamp is highly limited in stock, as only 500 copies of the stamp have been made. T
