Spanish Post honors Montserrat Caballé with a special stamp

Spanish Post issued a special stamp to honor one of Spain's greatest sopranos Montserrat Caballé; the item shows the singer’s portrait. She was one of the first voices in the world for her vocal quality and perfect mastery of technique. Montserrat sang a wide variety of roles, but is best known as an exponent of the works of Verdi and of the bel canto repertoire, notably the works of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. Montserrat died aged 85, in 2018.

Montserrat Caballé was hailed as one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century. She was known for the purity and subtlety of her voice during a career lasting six decades. A prima donna in every sense of the term, she embodied what it meant to be an opera star: she was temperamental, theatrical, imperious and, above all, deeply musical. Beginning in the 1950s, Caballé gave thousands of performances and made more than 80 recordings – famously including one in the 1980s with Freddie Mercury. She had an immense repertoire, performing leading operatic roles in several languages.
