30c Ultramarine & Carmine Flags Inverted is to fetch $90,000 at Siegel

30c Ultramarine & Carmine Flags Inverted is to fetch $90,000 at Siegel

Robert A Siegel is going to conduct “United States and Confederate States Stamps” auction on November 14-16. The sale contains a wide range of outstanding material such numerous inverts, rare compound and other perforation varieties etc. One of the highlights of this sale is 30c Ultramarine & Carmine Flags Inverted that is being offered to the market for the first time since 1941 Harmer, Rooke auction of the C. A. Brown collection. This brilliant lot could fetch more than its estimated value of $90,000.

The appearance of the 1869 Pictorials marked a significant change in U.S. stamp design. For the first time in American postal history, something other than portraits of national leaers was being pictured on a stamp. These were the first U.S. stamps to be printed using two colors. The frame of flags is printed in blue and the shield in red. The design was created so that the denomination – spelled out in red letters – flows over into the blue flag printing.

30c Ultramarine & Carmine Flags Inverted offered by Siegel is a very fine and rare used example of the 30-cent 1869 pictorial issue invert with wonderfully rich colors. The lot is described by auction house as featuring “three wide margins, neat strike of New York circle of eight wedges cancel, single nibbed perforation at lower left which is very minor and noted as "slightly short" on certificate”. The census of 30c 1869 Inverts contains a total of 47 stamps, including 7 unused and 40 used. Perhaps ten used examples are confirmed as sound. Several have significant faults. The example presented at this sale, with just a single slightly short perf, is essentially sound.
