100 years ago, the Lippizans, the world-famous white horses of the Spanish Riding School, found a home in Piber in western Styria. To mark this important event Austria Post released a stamp featuring the grace and beauty of the Lippizan mare Triesta with her foal Maestoso. A handwritten stud book can be seen in the background. The artwork for this stamp issue was provided by Anita Kern.
Lipizzaners are Europe’s oldest cultural horse breed, with their origin going back to the year 1580. As the only federal stud farm in Austria, Piber has the task of breeding those Lipizzaner stallions that appear in the world-famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The heart of the Lipizzaner breed are the mares, as they deliver the offspring for the Spanish Riding School and thus they receive special attention at the stud.
