Royal Mail has introduced a set of 10 iconic stamps featuring birds of prey. This bright philatelic set was prepared in collaboration with the world renowned photographer Tim Flach who specializes in animal photography. He captured the exquisite beauty of the birds in a mix of close-up shots and the majestic sight of them in flight. The stamps feature such birds as the white-tailed eagle, the buzzard, the sparrowhawk, the merlin, the golden eagle, the kestrel, the goshawk, the hobby, the red kite and the peregrine falcon.
The main thing that sets this bird collection apart from others is they are carnivores. Birds of prey have powerful leg and toe muscles and they are the only birds, which can catch and carry their food with their strong feet. Moreover, this philatelic release follows the recent news that the white-tailed eagle, which is currently considered extinct in England, is to be reintroduced on the Isle of Wight this summer in the hope of recovering the population.
"It’s always very special to be invited to work on a set of stamps. I think it's great that Royal Mail has chosen to put a focus on the birds of prey that we have in the UK. I’m really mindful of the fact that we’ve never been more separated from nature. And, the stamps really let us better understand what these animals are. It’s never been more important for us to think about the natural world," - Tim Flach said.
