Canada 12-penny black is to fetch $227,000 at Eastern auction

Eastern Auctions is to conduct one of its greatest sales in February. The auction will offer for collectors’ attention the second part of “The Highlands Collection of British North America”. One of the highlights of this outstanding sale is a mint 12-penny black issued by the Province of Canada in 1851. The lot described by auctioneers as “immaculate condition with impeccable and illustrious provenance” is expected to fetch $300,000 CAD, or roughly $227,000 USD.

Canada 12d black or The Black Empress of Canada is a rare Canadian postage stamp issued in 1851. The 12-pence stamp shows the portrait of Queen Victoria by Alfred Edward Chalon and is the third stamp issued by the province. The specimen offered at this sale is a truly remarkable example of this keenly sought-after classic stamp. According to the auction house the lot displays a “virtually unmatched combination of physical attributes, including prominent laid lines, large margins, exceptional colour and a clear impression on pristine fresh paper.”

Canada 12-penny black is one of hundreds of pieces in the multi-million dollar Highlands Collection of British North America, which will offer a lot of interesting philatelic material. Let’s follow this auction to see its exciting results!
