Decorated eggs appeared on three new Slovenian Easter stamps!

Slovenia Post has prepared for Easter and introduced three great stamps that show decorated eggs, which in Slovenia are known as pirhi, pisanice, pisanke, remenke or remenice. Being the central feature of the festive table, the decorated eggs differ according to various regions of Slovenia, as reflected in their names. Like in many other countries, these eggs are a permanent fixture among the foodstuffs that people bring to church for the Easter blessing.

Eggs are one of the most important religious symbols that were even found in many pre-Christian cultures, for example the ancient Chinese and Egyptian cultures. The ancient Romans used to place painted goose eggs in the graves of the dead. Eggs also associated with the creation of the Earth, while at the same time the egg is the most perfect symbol of fertility. For Christians, the Easter egg is symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Painting Easter eggs is an especially beloved tradition in the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches where the eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross.
