Euromed Postal: Traditional Costumes – three stamps issued by Malta Post

The Euromed Postal Joint stamp project is a commitment which is intended to be held annually.  MaltaPost will be participating in a EuroMed Postal Union philatelic issue, themed ‘Traditional Costumes’ with a set of three stamps. The issue features two women’s costumes and one men’s garment. The stamp set is designed by MaltaPost Creative Studio and the photography is by Heritage Malta.

Back in the days, cotton was the primary material used in making the clothes of peasants and country folk. Traditional Maltese clothes ranged from the humble attire of country folk to the lavish costumes of the more privileged classes. The natural colours of cotton were white, beige and brown, which is reflected in the choice of colours found in typical traditional Maltese costumes. One very particular aspect of the traditional clothes in Malta is the Maltese “Faldetta” or as known with the locals as the “Għonnella”. This was a form of women’s head dress and shawl, or hooded cloak, unique to the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo.
