Mammals of Scandinavia – two great stamps released by Greenland Post!

Mammals of Scandinavia – two great stamps released by Greenland Post!

This year’s Norden series is focused on Mammals, and this is a theme that has always been highly popular in Greenland. This will be the last time the Nordic postal administrations issue the common themed stamps, so these will be the last Greenlandic Norden stamps. Such a decision was reached by unanimous agreement among all eight Nordic postal administrations. This spectacular issue was designed by artist Miki Jacobsen.

The first stamp depicts two Musk oxen, characterized by their heavy and thick pelt, and their unique horns. This tough animal usually lives in herds, and the herds grass the tundra and shrubs of Northern Greenland where they naturally live, as well as Western Greenland, where they have been released into the wild. The animals are drawn in their natural habitat - a barren landscape, with the occasional shrub.

The second stamp depicts a pair of walruses, floating elegantly through the water. These creatures look clumsy and slow, but in the water, they are effective hunters, despite their massive size. All walruses develop tusks that can get as long as 50 cm, and male walruses are severely scarred in the front of the body, as they engage in pre-mating fights among each other, to determine who gets to mate.
