Personalities: George Orwell stamp from Czech Republic

Ceska posta issued a stamp commemorating the novel by George Orwell "1984".

Eric Arthur Blair, known by his pen name George Orwell, was a visionary. This English journalist, essayist and novelist was born on 25 June 1903 in India and died on 21 January 1950. His allegorical novels "Animal Farm" and "1984", which describe the inhumane nature of totalitarian ideologies in a way that was surprisingly true and far removed from any utopia, gained popularity all around the world.

Orwell's novels and essays not only deal with politics but also provide a commentary on contemporary life and social themes. Orwell is generally considered as one of the best English essayists. His books were banned by the Czechoslovak communist government and Czech editions came out only in exile.
