Siegel is to sell 2c Red Coil joint line pair for $28,000

Robert A Siegel is to sell “The James Depew Collection of Superb United States Coils and 20th Century Imperforates” that is the finest condition collection of these issues ever assembled. One of the most extraordinary lots of this auction is rare mint never-hinged 2c Red Coil joint line pair (Type I) with an exceptional centering and wide margins all around. Only few pairs pf this challenging coil issues exist in such condition. The auction will take place on May 22.

The 2c Type I rotary plate was used very briefly to make vertical coils issued in late 1915. Due to the curve of the plate to fit the rotary press, the impressions lacked some of the details of the flat plate printings. The Bureau noticed this immediately, and quickly replaced the 2c Type I rotary plate with the Type III plate. The joint line pair offered by Siegel, in Mint N.H. condition and with such choice centering and color, is a major rarity.  This unique philatelic item, featuring brilliant color and detailed impression, is expected to fetch $28,000 or even more!
