PostEurop announced the winners of this year`s philatelic competition. Stamp of Turkey was selected as the winner during online voting and Belgium’s item was awarded the title of the most beautiful Europa stamps of 2018 by jury. Both stamps depict bridges, the theme for the 2018 multi-nation Europa stamp series. A total of 57 postal administrations participated in the competitions, each entering one stamp. So let’s get acquainted with the results of this philatelic contest in details.
The stamp presented by Turkish Post received the first place. It shows the Edırne Uzunkopru Bridge, a stone bridge built by Ottoman architect Muslihiddin between 1426 and 1443. It was claimed by UNESCO as the longest bridge in the world. Poland Post and Georgian Post got the second and the third places respectively. These are the results of public voting.
"I am very proud to announce that this year we had a record number of votes, a new milestone of 23 thousand! It makes me happy to see such level of engagement from voters all around the globe, in philately. The outcome of this year's competition is a great reward for the magnificent designers who via their creativity has created authentic works of art made with different production techniques, including engravings with different layers, watercolour paintings and photography" said Agnieszka Trząskowska, Chair of the PostEurop Stamps and Philately working group from Poczta Polska S.A.
A jury composed of seven philatelic experts participated in the EUROPA Jury competition. As a result of two rounds of voting the jury proudly announced Belgium`s stamp as the winner of this year's 2018 EUROPA stamp Jury Prize. The item shows one of Europe’s oldest bridges, Pont des Trous in Tournai. Built in the 13th century as part of the city’s walls, the bridge served as a watergate on the Scheldt River. The second place went both to Magyar Posta and Finland Post. Croatia Post was named the third-place winner of the competition.
“Bridges are a powerful element of the European architectural scene, which can reflect the cultural diversity present across the continent. It symbolises the spirit of unity between nations. Therefore, I was extremely pleased to see so many beautiful entries that could perfectly depict these elements. I have to congratulate all of the designers for being able to produce such great designs, they really made it difficult for the jury to elect this year’s winning stamp” commented Botond Szebeny, PostEurop Secretary General.
We congratulate all the winners and would like to remind you that the theme of the next PostEurop’s philatelic competition is “National Birds”.
