Liechtenstein Post presented three new original stamps featuring the eyes of birds. Designed by Hans Peter Gassner the issue is called ‘Artistic Photography: Birds Eyes’ and reproduce close-up photographs taken by Sven Beham of birds native to Liechtenstein: the gray heron, great crested grebe and cormorant. All three live near or on the water. The stamps featuring a bright design and really artistic images will be definitely popular among topical stamp collectors.
The yellow eye of the heron is featured on the 1-franc stamp. This species of birds was widely hunted from the middle of the 19th century. In 1920s a grey heron was included in the list of protected species. Since then, the numbers of these birds have slowly but gradually increased. The bright red eye of the grebe appeared on the 1.30fr stamp. This bird lives on lakes, reservoirs and slow-flowing rivers. It has dazzling red eyes, although its overall look is also striking. The courtship dance of grebes is fascinating to watch as the necks and beaks of the partners create the shape of a heart. The blue eye of the cormorant is depicted on the 1.50fr stamp. This beautiful bird has dark feathers with a metallic gloss cuts an impressive figure. Cormorants feed almost exclusively on fish and often dive for food together.
