USPS issued a set of eight special stamps celebrating popular American backyard games. The issue shows such games as badminton, bocce, cornhole, croquet, flying disc, horseshoes, tetherball, and a variation on pick-up baseball. Each item highlights the movement of the game pieces, adding some action to the artwork.
The philatelic release was designed by Mick Wiggins who drew the inspiration from the iconography of vintage sporting posters when creating the digital illustrations. The central focus of each stunning stamp is the equipment used to play the game. As an example, the Badminton stamp depicts a shuttlecock flying over the game net. In the background of an item, you can see a smiling woman with her racket in motion. The designed issue evokes the nostalgic feeling of amusement when playing backyard games as a child. Greg Breeding was the art director, whereas Mike Ryan designed the stamps.
