25th anniversary of Declaration of Independence celebrated by Latvian Post

According to info received by Latvijas Pasts released a new stamp in honor of 25th anniversary of Latvia's Declaration of Independence. The item has been designed by Ludis Danilāns and was put into circulation on the 27th of April.

On May 4, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Latvian SSR adopted the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia and renewed the 1922 Constitution of Latvia.

That decision empowered the Supreme Council to declare Latvia an independent and democratic state and set a transition period for restoring de facto Latvian rule, which resulted in the assembly of the fifth Saeima (Parliament) of the Republic of Latvia. This fact was subsequently announced to the governments of the then USSR and other countries and nations.

A lot of people invested their hearts and their ideas in recovering a fully independent statehood by joining the Popular Front of Latvia, attending demonstrations, shaping public opinion in Latvia's regions and voting for the Popular Front's representatives in local government elections on December 10, 1989, and Supreme Council elections on March 18, 1990.
