“450 years of printing in Russia” – new issue of Russian Post

September 7th, 2014

StamNews.com is glad to inform that Russian Post issued a stamp commemorating the anniversary of printing. The item was released on the 3d of September and is now available for purchasing.

Typography was one of the greatest achievements of Russian culture in the middle of the XVI century.

450 years ago on the 19th of April 1563, Ivan Fyodorov's printing house opened in Nikolskaya Street not far from the Moscow Kremlin. The first book to be printed by Ivan Fedorov and Petr Mstislavets was an Apostle, and they had every reason to choose that very book. Prior to this, some liturgical works, including the Psalter, Lenten and Festal Trioditions had already been issued in Moscow.

The stamp depicts a double-page of the book "The Apostle" on the background of Cyrillic letters. It is now stored in the State Public Historical Library of Russia.
