A selection of Christmas postcards appeared on stamps. Four festive stamps released by Liechtenstein Post

December 4th, 2016

FindYourStampsValue.com is glad to inform our readers that Lichtenstein Post has released a special set of four stamps to celebrate the upcoming Christmas.

These special items depict beautiful postcards on Christmas themes, the originals of which can be viewed in the Principality of Liechtenstein’s postal museum.

The four motifs Lamplight (value CHF 0.85), Exchanging Christmas Presents (value CHF 1.00), City Scene (value CHF 1.50) and Winter Walk (value CHF 2.00) are issued as self-adhesive stamps on sheets of 20. The typography of the Christmas cards, most of which date from the early years of the 20th century, was finished using hot foil stamping in gold.

The Christmas card tradition can be traced back to 1843 when print shop owner Henry Cole in London hired an illustrator to create a Christmas card bearing the words “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You”. The artist took his inspiration from the shape of an altarpiece and composed a picture of a family celebration with a border of branches and vines, conveying an atmosphere of good cheer and kindliness.

Besides these nostalgic Christmas cards, the Principality of Liechtenstein’s postal museum in Vaduz has on display a representative cross-section of the entire Liechtenstein philately since the issuance of the first stamps in 1912.
