Cats as the second-most popular pet in Australia

May 14th, 2015 would like to introduce a special stamp issue by Australia Post that is dedicated to cats. This release introduces five cute and well-cared-for cats of varying coat lengths, colourings and personalities: Charo, Bubu, Sweetie, Cato and Briony. They span the four categories of cats used by many national and state cat associations in Australia. The issue was into circulation on the 5th of May.

The first social cat club in Australia was founded in Victoria, in 1919. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy was the first national cat association, also set up in Victoria in 1928. It was only the third such group in existence globally at the time, reflecting a significant national interest in cats. Even today, cats are the second-most popular pet in Australia. By far the most common type of pet cat is the domestic shorthair, like our handsome ginger moggie, Bubu.

Briony (shown in the fifth stamp) is an Australian Mist, the only cat breed wholly originated in Australia.
