Don't panic! Dad's Army turns 50 with eight stamps by Royal Mail

June 10th, 2018 is delighted to present to your attention a set of eight stamps by Royal Mail to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a comedy TV series called Dad’s Army. Each item features different important characters from the popular TV show, along with their catchphrases. The stamps are Royal Mail’s first ever dedicated British sitcom stamp issue. These amazing philatelic items will be available to the public from 26th June.

Dad’s Army is one of the most favourite and famous classic British sitcoms that fully deserves its classic status. The comedy focused on a Home Guard platoon commanded by pompous bank manager Captain Mainwaring and his mild-mannered chief clerk, Sergeant Wilson, as they provide Walmington-on-Sea’s last line of defence against the imminent Nazi invasion.

Philip Parker, of Royal Mail, said: “Few TV comedies have inspired as much affection, or given us as many catchphrases, as Dad’s Army. On its 50th birthday we hope these new stamps will raise plenty of smiles.”

One of the stamps depicts the character Captain Mainwaring and his famous dialogue ‘You stupid boy!’ which was directed to a character named Private Pike. Ian Lavender played Pike’s character and is the only surviving member of the original cast. He said it was "overwhelming" to be featured on a stamp and commented: “I didn’t believe you could have someone still alive on a stamp apart from the Queen. Being on a stamp is not something you hope for simply because it is so unlikely.”
