In accordance with the established protocol, and in the presence of the President of the Congress, the President of the Government, Members of Parliament, Senators and other dignitaries, Felipe VI swore loyalty to the Constitution and gave his first speech as King.

This historic occasion took place in the Congress of Deputies and in his intervention Felipe VI referred to the numerous issues that affect Spanish society and to his desire to serve Spain: "A diverse yet united nation", and to his determination to embody a reinvigorated Monarchy for a new era. He made that quite clear in his speech when he stated: "I take up my task with energy, enthusiasm and with the open-minded spirit of renewal that inspires the men and women of my generation".
