Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union commemorated with a new issue

January 2nd, 2015 is glad to inform that Latvian Post is ready to release a new stamp to celebrate Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The stamp release has been already prepared and is scheduled to be put into circulation on the 6th of January.

On January 1, Latvia takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) for the first half of 2015. An important task, it offers both new challenges and opportunities, and Latvia is confident its turn at the wheel will be a success.

As with last year, when Latvia joined the Eurozone and Rīga became the European Capital of Culture for 2014, the year 2015 promises worldwide attention and many headlines in international press for the Baltic state.

Nonetheless, the Latvian presidency will still be kept in consistency with the course all 28 EU member states have agreed upon. Latvia will continue the work of its trio partner Italy, later handing the reins over to Luxembourg. To ensure the consistency, as well as the synergy, between the various elements of the implementation and preparation stage of the Latvian presidency there have been guiding principles defined in which the fundamental values of Latvia and the EU are reflected: involvement, growth and sustainability

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates among the EU Member States every six months and the country holding the presidency drives forward the Council's work. The EU Council is an essential decision maker which together with the European Parliament (EP) adopts legislation and coordinates EU policies.

It is an opportunity for each member state, regardless of its size or the length of membership, to influence the EU agenda and guide many EU endeavors. Latvia is assuming this task for the first time from January 1 to June 30.
