Nijegorodskoe Zavolje – one of the best biosphere reserves in Russia

According to info received by Russian Post has introduced a special stamp marking the Russian biosphere reserve – Nijegorodskoe Zavolie. The stamp depicts one of the most beautiful vistas of this reserve. The item is scheduled to be put into circulation on the 25th of November.

This Russian biosphere reserve is located in the middle section of the Volga River about 55 km south-west of the city Nizhni Novgorod. Part of the biosphere reserve, 'Kama-Bakaldino Mires', is designated as Ramsar wetland, representing the largest peatland complex to the south of the northern taiga zone in Europe.

The biosphere reserve comprises large areas of pine forests recovering from logging activities and fires since the 1970s. Some fragments of old growth have been preserved. Within the biosphere reserve, logging, poaching and peat extraction is restricted.

The biosphere reserve is included in the UNESCO's list of heritage sites.
