October is National Stamp Collecting Month
October is famous to be National Stamp Collecting Month. According to info got by FindYourStampsValue.com the Plymouth Public Library is featuring a display from the Plymouth Rock Stamp to celebrate one of the world's most popular hobbies - philately.
Founded in 2006, the Plymouth Rock Stamp Club is a chapter of the American Philatelic Society - the largest, nonprofit organization for stamp collectors in the world. Club members meet twice a month to share information, stamps and camaraderie. One of the group's most successful activities is the creation of colorful stamp bookmarks, which highlight the tremendous beauty and variety of postage stamps used throughout the world. A collection of these free bookmarks is available near the display.
The club's display includes commemorative issues celebrating Princess Diana and Pope John Paul II, colorful examples of fish and flower stamps, including a scented variety, and even stamps dedicated to the movie "Toy Story" and the popular "Hello Kitty" character.
The display also includes information about the Plymouth Rock Stamp Club's initiative to petition the U.S. Postal Service to issue one or more stamps commemorating Plymouth's 400th anniversary. The Club is working with Plymouth 400 Inc. and is asking the public to assist by contacting the Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee about this initiative.
