Roma heroes of 1956 commemorated by Magyar Posta! Ten special stamps introduced to collectors` attention

April 17th, 2018 is delighted to announce that Magyar Posta honored the Roma heroes of 1956 by issuing a special miniature sheet of ten stamps. Designed by the graphic artist Attila André Elekes these stamps remembered the deeds of Roma heroes of 1956 and honored their memory. Each of the items stamps shows the expressive, dramatic compositions of the Kossuth Prize winning artist of Roma origin István Szentandrássy.

Hungary wrote world history through the 1956 revolution and fight for freedom, which required the nation to unite against the oppressive, dictatorial and deceitful regime imposed on the country. During this period of time it was important for people and the destiny of their country to join together to fight against oppression. The series of ten stamps, which was presented in Budapest’s House of Terror museum, carries the reproductions of the paintings of István Szentandrássy of ten Roma heroes including eminent pianist György Cziffra and nine freedom fighters.

Presenting the series, Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog said that freedom has always been the glue to keep Romani and Hungarians together.

“Doing our best to integrate the Roma provides a moral justification for our rejection of migration,” he said.

The stamps presented by Magyar Posta bear very important and historically meaningful message that the unity is people`s strength and hope for a peaceful future.
