Stamp celebrating the life of Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney

August 30th, 2014 got to know that Irish Post has issued a stamp celebrating the life of Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney to mark the first anniversary of his passing. The item was released On August 28th, 2014.

Seamus Heaney was a poet, playwright, translator and lecturer, winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature and one of Ireland's greatest and most respected writers. His work is admired by everyone from Irish schoolchildren who learn about his poetry in class to Heads of State and artists like Paul Simon who wrote a beautiful obituary for him last year in the New York Times.

The 68c commemorative stamp features John Minihan's black and white portrait of the poet and is complemented by a special 'First Day Cover' envelope featuring an extract from his 1969 poem, "Bogland".

Seamus' son Michael said his family are "immensely moved" by An Post's decision to mark the poet's memory.

"The year since he died has been a sad time for our family, but this is not only a wonderful testament to his life and work, but also a reminder of the generosity and support people have shown since Dad's passing", he said.

Co Derry-born Heaney was 74 when he died on August 30, 2013.
