April 18th, 2023: Robert Siegel US Philately Auction

On April 18th, 2023, Robert Siegel is holding a philately auction. There will be 209 lots from the Jeffrey Foster (famous American lawyer and philatelist) Collection used in international mails. The initial prices for items will be established based on the auctioneer's evaluation, taking into consideration the estimates of comparable items.

The amount that the buyer must pay will be calculated by adding the final bid with an 18% commission fee, also known as the "buyer's premium," and any applicable sales tax, use tax or customs duties that are required for the sale. The format of the auction will be online live bidding. All the participants need to register on the website first to purchase items.

Here are some interesting lots that will be presented on the auction

Shield and Eagle, 10c Yellow stamp

$50,000. One of the most highly valued items up for auction is an envelope containing two stamps. The first stamp is a Shield and Eagle, 10c Yellow (numbered 116 in the Scott catalog). The second stamp is a 3c Rose on White colors, issued in 1866 and used with Danish West Indies, with a strikingly vibrant color and proof-like impression. It boasts large margins, except for a slight touch at the lower left corner, and is cancelled twice by a five-ring target cancel.

The envelope was sent from La Guaira, Venezuela, to New York, and bears a large, oval, blue handstamp on the left side with the inscription "Alexandre Fleury y Cia La Guayra," applied by the sender. On the right side of the envelope, there is an arrival mark that reads "York Oct. 20," even though the envelope was actually sent on October 8, 1869.

Shield, Eagle and Flags, 30c Blue & Carmine stamp and George Washington, 10c Green stamp with F Grill

$50,000. An item up for auction is a buff cover with a Shield, Eagle and Flags, 30c Blue & Carmine stamp (numbered 121 in the Scott catalog) and a George Washington, 10c Green stamp with F Grill (numbered 96 in the Scott catalog), both well-centered and tied by a clear blue "Cincinnati O. Jan. 25" circular datestamp and duplex target cancel. This lette is addressed to Baden, Germany and features a handsome printed corner card with a route directive of "PER STEAMER, VIA BREMEN OR HAMBURG."

The quadruple 10c rate is prepaid, and there is a red "New York Paid All Direct Jan. 29" circular datestamp. The cover also bears a "Bremen 10 2 70 Franco" framed datestamp, which means February 10, 1870, and has a vertical fold at the right, as well as two slits and a small tear at the bottom which has been sealed with hinges.

Shield, Eagle and Flags, 30c Blue & Carmine stamp

$15,000. A folded letter with a Shield, Eagle and Flags, 30c Blue & Carmine stamp (Scott Catalogue number 121) was cancelled by a rosette cancel and postmarked with a circular datestamp reading "New-York Feb. 2". This letter was addressed to Calleja Martinez in Vera Cruz, Mexico and sent by M. Echeverria Co.

The sender specified "pr Cleopatra" as the preferred mode of transport. Upon its arrival in Mexico, the letter was marked with a "5" reales due marking, indicating the amount of internal Mexican postage required for its delivery. This correspondence provides a fascinating glimpse into the international postal system and the various postal markings that were used during the 19th century.
