Croatian fauna – three beautiful stamps released!

Croatia Post released three great stamps featuring the representatives of the country’s fauna. This philatelic release is devoted to marine animals. The items show loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the giant devil rays (Mobula mobular). The issue was created by Nataša Odak, a designer from Zagreb.

The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is the most frequent turtle in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Sea. This species has a bony oval shell, reddish-brown in color. The adult turtle is one meter long. The lifespan of Loggerhead sea turtles is approximately 60 years. The female representatives lay eggs on the sandy beaches every four years.

The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is recognized by its distinctive fusiform and hydrodynamic body shape for super-fast swimming. Featuring darker-blue color, the dolphin breathes air through the blowhole on the top of its head. The representatives who live in the Adriatic Sea usually reach three meters in length and weigh 200 kg. The common bottlenose dolphins live more than 30 years.

The giant devil rays (Mobula mobular), which is also known as „devil fish“, live in the pelagic zone of the open sea. Their main diet is planktonic organisms, small crustaceans, and small schooling fish. This species features dark grey or brown back, and a completely white belly. It can be found in almost all seas in tropical and temperate regions. Even though the giant devil rays is a fish, it does not lay eggs, but a single large egg grows inside the female.
