Latvijas Pasts introduced a new stamp to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Ernests Birznieks-Upītis, who is regarded as one of the most famous Latvian writers who devoted a great number of his literary works to the life of Latvian farmers at the beginning of the 20th century. The philatelic release has been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.
Ernests Birznieks-Upītis was a teacher by profession. Traveling much across Latvia and Russia, he, with great knowledge and love, displayed the life of an average working person in his stories. Continuing the tradition of a realistic novella introduced by the best Latvian novelist Rudolf Blaumanis, Birzniek-Upit gives a truthful, realistic portrayal of the surrounding in his pieces of writing. His most famous literary works are “Pelēkā akmens stāsti” (Stories of Grey Stone), “Pret vakaru” (Towards evening), “Pastariņa dienasgrāmata” (Diary of the youngest son), “Pastariņš skolā” (Younger son in school), and others.
