Trump Plans to Reshape USPS

President Donald Trump is reportedly contemplating significant changes to the United States Postal Service (USPS), including integrating it into his administration and dismissing its board of governors. According to sources cited by The Washington Post on February 21, an executive order could be issued imminently to transfer USPS oversight to the Commerce Department, led by Secretary Howard Lutnick. However, a White House spokesperson has refuted claims of such an order being planned.

In response to these developments, the USPS board of governors convened an emergency meeting on February 20, during which they engaged external legal counsel and prepared to challenge any attempts to alter the agency’s independent status or remove its members. This move underscores the board’s commitment to maintaining the USPS’s autonomy.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who assumed his role on June 16, 2020, has recently informed the board of governors of his intention to step down, prompting the initiation of a search for his successor. This leadership change comes at a time when more than 70% of Americans hold a favorable view of the Postal Service, as reported by a 2024 Pew Research Center study.

The potential restructuring has sparked political debate, with Representative Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) stating that privatizing the Postal Service would undermine Americans’ access to essential services, including critical information and medical care. President Trump’s relationship with the USPS has been contentious, notably referring to it as “Amazon’s ‘Delivery Boy’” in past remarks.

As of now, the USPS has not issued an official response to these reports.
