USPS: Time for a New Postmaster General after Louis Decoy

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has informed the United States Postal Service’s Board of Governors that it’s time to initiate the search for his successor. DeJoy, who assumed leadership of the USPS in June 2020, has had a tenure marked by both significant initiatives and controversies.

In 2021, DeJoy introduced a comprehensive 10-year plan aimed at addressing the Postal Service’s financial challenges, which included measures such as service adjustments and cost-cutting strategies. Despite these efforts, the USPS continued to face financial difficulties, reporting a net loss of $9.5 billion in 2024.

Throughout his tenure, DeJoy faced criticism from various quarters, including congressional members concerned about service reductions and their potential impact on mail-in voting during the 2020 elections. Additionally, his operational changes, such as network consolidations, drew scrutiny for their potential effects on mail delivery times, especially in rural areas.

Amber McReynolds, chairwoman of the USPS Board of Governors, acknowledged DeJoy’s service, stating, “Louis DeJoy has steadfastly served the nation and the Postal Service over the past five years.”

The Board of Governors will now commence the process of identifying a suitable candidate to lead the USPS forward.
