1849 1 franc Vermilion stamp is to be sold for $51,518 at Christoph Gärtner

Auktionshaus Christoph Gaertner will held their 2nd Special Auction on 1st September 2018 featuring some of the greatest world`s rarities. One of the highlights of this sale is 1849 1 franc Vermilion that is considered to be the most popular and thought-after classic stamps of France. The lot featuring the original gum is being offered with a starting price of $51,518.

Issued January 1, 1849, 1 franc Vermilion is French stamp that has the highest rating. He served postage letters of 15-100 g. Initially, this stamp was printed in "vermilion", that is to say in light red. Then it was printed in dark red called "crimson." The stamp design shows Ceres (a Roman goddess of agriculture) that was a symbol of France at that time. The drawing of the head of Ceres is the work of Jacques-Jean Barre, 17th General engraver of the Paris Mint from 1842 to 1855. The stamp was withdrawn from sale in December 1849 by the General Post Office because of its similarity to the 40 cents orange red stamp.

The auction house described this lot as “a mint example with clear to large margins all around, fresh colour, tiny trace of hinge at top, very fine; an exceptionally rare stamp with gum.”

Nowadays, the 1 franc Vermilion is one of the most sought after and most expensive stamps French stamps. As having been used very little for a short time, the stamp is quiet valuable and scarce. Grab a chance to acquire this unique philatelic item!
