Ancient Greek literature – five stamps released by Greece Post

History, tragedy and philosophy, as well as the concept of democracy were first brought into the world by ancient Greek thinkers including Herodotus, Euripides, Xenophon, Socrates and Epicurus. To honor these outstanding personalities, Greece Post introduced a special set of five stamps. The new philatelic series was based on designs created by artist Yannis Gourzis who used five different colours creating this special stamp release.

So the first stamp is devoted to Herodotus who was a Greek writer who invented the field of study known today as `history’. The second one shows Euripides who was the last of classical Athens's three great tragic dramatists, following Aeschylus and Sophocles. The third item features Xenophon - a Greek historian and philosopher, whose numerous surviving works are valuable for their depiction of late Classical Greece. The fourth stamp honors Socrates who was a classical Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, and as being the first moral philosopher.  And the last stamp is devoted to Epicurus - an ancient Greek philosopher who founded a highly influential school of philosophy now called Epicureanism.
