Fish in Greenlandic waters – two great stamps released!

Fish in Greenlandic waters – two great stamps released!

Greenland Post launched a new series about Fish in Nordic waters as part of the “Norden” common issue in 2018. The other postal services made this a single issue, but Greenland decided to expand the issue and to release the second set of Fish in Greenlandic waters stamps. The two stunning and impressively lifelike stamps are designed by Martin Mörck, who has designed all the stamps in this series.

The first of the two species depicted in this issue is the black dogfish, which is a species of shark, and is recognizable by its dark body, which is darker below than above, and the large, oval eyes. The black dogfish is found on the East coast of Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and as far down as southern Norway, where it lives at depths of 500 to 1300 meters.

The second species is the Atlantic tuna, also known as the bluefin tuna. This is the largest species of tuna in the world, and they can grow to more than 3 meters in length and weigh up to 700 kilograms! Historically bluefin tuna has been frequent visitors in Scandinavian waters, but has kept out of Greenlandic waters. However, this has changed over the past years, and we now regularly see bluefin tuna in the waters around Eastern Greenland.
