Norway's national bird appeared on Europa 2019 stamp

Norway Post released a special stamp for “Europa 2019” philatelic contest. It features the white-throated dipper that is considered as Norway’s national bird. The bird’s ability to survive in a barren landscape represents something that is typical for the Norwegians. The white-throated dipper is also special because this is the only songbird, which not only swims well but also dives very skilfully. You can scan stamp with a free app to listen to the bird.

The white-throated can namely build its nest behind waterfalls. This bird needs running freshwater, because that is where its primary source of food resides. And Norway has lots of fast-running freshwater, especially as mountain snow melts and flows downhill, creating waterfalls, streams, and other drainage pathways. This characteristically black and white bird thrives throughout most of Norway, and its wings make a special whirring sound while it flies that distinguishes it from other birds. Its feathers are brownish-black with white markings on its neck and breast.
