100 years since the first transatlantic flight marked with an Irish stamp!

Ireland Post issued a beautiful stamp in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Transatlantic flight. This special item depicts the plane flown by aviators Alcock and Brown, who on June 15th 1919 became the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean in less than 72 hours. On the item the airplane is featured on a beautifully cloudy background, with the Atlantic Ocean posing a constant threat to the aviators.

Aviation worldwide was forever changed a century ago when British pilots Capt. John Alcock and Lt. Arthur Whitten Brown boarded their modified First World War Vickers Vimy bomber in Newfoundland and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Ireland, making the first-ever successful non-stop transatlantic flight. The effort earned them quite a reputation, along with the prize of £10,000 that was offered by the newspaper The Daily Mail. The flight began in Newfoundland, and they landed 16 hours later in Galway, Ireland.
