Queen Margrethe II has the reputation of being Europe's most intellectual monarch. She became the Danish queen in 1972 and since that time Greenland Post has issued several stamps to honor this famous personality. On the occasion of the Queen's 80th birthday, which was celebrated on the 16th April, Greenland Post presented a new beautiful stamp.
The stamp shows the portrait of Her Majesty who is wearing a Greenlandic national costume. It was painted by the internationally acclaimed Greenlandic artist, Aka Høegh. The artist has been inspired by her encounters with the regent over the years. The mountain peaks in the background also form a crown-like imagery above the majesty's head, a perfectly deliberate choice by Aka Høegh.
