Art Canada: Yousuf Karsh

Art Canada: Yousuf Karsh

This set of three stamps celebrates photographer Yousuf Karsh and his work on the 100th anniversary of his birth.

The stamps are part of the Art Canada series.

Born in Armenia-in-Turkey in 1908, Karsh's photographic career began in 1925 when he apprenticed under his uncle in Quebec. Over a sixty-year career, Karsh told the stories of those individuals that defined the 20th century through stunning black and white photographs including Albert Einstein, Mother Teresa, and Walt Disney. His trademark style of dramatic lighting and creative composition can be seen in three different commemorative issues featuring the photographs of Winston Churchill from a Life magazine cover ($1.60), a portrait of Audrey Hepburn (96c), and a self-portrait of Karsh at work (52c).

Date of issue: 21 May 2008
