Your chance to contemplate the aurora borealis in Åland is pretty good from mid-August to April when nights are dark. Åland Post has prepared for issuance a special stamp featuring this fascinating luminous phenomenon, commonly called the northern lights. The stamp shows a photograph taken by Ingmar Eriksson and the ruins of Bomarsund fortress, appearing in the foreground. Let's take a closer look at this item and at other Northern Lights stamp issues.
One of the great attractions of Åland Islands is the chance to experience the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, and every year thousands of visitors come here to see them. The photographer Ingmar Eriksson is often out at night, up to 40 times in a year, to catch the northern lights. The stamp motif was shot on a late December night with the Notvik Tower that is an excellent location to catch the luminous phenomenon. The heights with a clear view towards the north offers the best chance to see the lights. Ingmar Eriksson chairs the Åland photo club Obscura and has taken many photos of nature, fishing and bicycling over the years. This is Ingmar’s first stamp.
