Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday known as the Festival of Lights, is being celebrated on new stamp by Canada Post. The stamp features a stylized menorah with its nine candles against a bright yellow background. Shadowing behind the menorah gives the design depth. The item will allow the Canadians to make their Hanukkah cards and other mail more festive.
Hanukkah has been celebrated in Canada for more than 250 years, since 1760, when the first Jews were allowed to immigrate. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of Judaism's holiest site, the Temple in Jerusalem, in the second century B.C., after the Jewish people fought and regained their religious freedom. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Dec. 22 and concludes the evening of Dec. 30.
