Canada’s 17th prime minister honored with a new stamp!

Canada's 17th prime minister who is well-known for his fairness and civility is honored with a special stamp. Right Honourable John Napier Wyndham Turner influenced Canada’s political situation greatly and gained enormous respect among the Canadians. The stamp features a family photo of Turner on a sailing trip with friends through Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off British Columbia’s west coast, in 1985.

Turner graduated from the University of Oxford and earned a law degree. In 1962 he was elected to the House of Commons. He occupied many ministerial positions under then prime ministers Lester B. Pearson and Pierre Trudeau. John Turner served as the 17th prime minister of Canada from June 30 to September 17, 1984. After the term, he was a leader of the Official Opposition from 1984 to 1990, and in 1993 John Turner returned to his career as a lawyer. This honorable politician passed away on September 19, 2020.

"This is a tremendous tribute to John, and an honor to our family to see his life's work recognized in such a meaningful way," says his widow Geills Turner. "The photo on the stamp is so special. I took it while we were sailing through a beautiful part of our country, in Haida Gwaii in 1985. It represents John and his spirit. It evokes the love he had for nature, for the water, for Canada."
