Cherrystone offers 1918 "2 DOLLARI Pechino" for $45,000

Cherrystone is to hold its “Rare Stamps and Postal History of the World” auction that will take place on August 6-7. The sale will offer 1,668 lots and will begin with the philatelic material from the United States, followed by Austria, Belgium, France and Colonies, Germany and Colonies, German World War II Occupation Issues, Italy and Colonies, Liechtenstein, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Scandinavian Countries. One of the highlights of this sale is 1918 "2 DOLLARI Pechino" local handstamp type II on 5 Lire.

1918 "2 DOLLARI Pechino" local handstamp type II on 5 Lire is a phenomenal rarity of the Offices in Peking featuring this extremely rare type of surcharge with all capital letters in "DOLLARI". The most common type of Peking was made by adding a surcharge with "dollari" in lower case to an already overprinted stamp for Peking from the previous issue. In the same year of 1918 this extremely rare type with "DOLLARI" in all capital letters was produced. The auction house described this lot as follows: “A premier rarity from the Italian Colonies and of the Italian Offices in Pechino, certainly one of the best, if not the finest of the only 15 (!) issued, perfect in every respect.”

The stamp is being offered with a starting price of $45,000.
