The ship "ENDURANCE" lay submerged for 109 years, approximately 3 kilometers beneath the ice in the Weddell Sea. It was uncovered by a search vehicle in March 2022. In honor of this, the Falkland Islands Post Service Limited released two stamps along with a souvenir sheet.
Each stamp portrays an image of the ship beneath the water. King Charles III's cipher is located in the upper right corner, while the name of the region is shown in the top left. A five-pointed star appears in the lower right corner, with the value displayed in the lower left.
Interestingly, the vessel was named "Polaris" at first. However, Shackleton, the ship's owner and captain, chose to rename it, inspired by his family's slogan: "By endurance we conquer."
The Survival Story
In the winter of 1915, the vessel got ice-trapped and endured ten months of confinement before sinking. After five months spent in the harsh conditions, Shackleton and his crew of 27 members took to three small boats, undertaking a challenging six-day journey through severe weather to Elephant Island.
Their rescue finally occurred in August 1916, with the entire crew surviving this harrowing experience.
