
Czech Post honored a Czech painter, illustrator, caricaturist, and filmmaker Adolf Born with a special stamp. He became famous in the field of book illustrations, animated movies, cartoon humour, graphic art or drawings, but also for his stage designs or costume designs. Designed by Vladimír Suchánek, the stamp shows a portrait of Adolf Born along with his legendary characters, Mach, Šebestová, and the dog Jonatán.
Adolf Born illustrated more than 250 books and contributed to more than 60 animated films. The most famous animated films include Mach and Šebestová. The best-known books illustrated by Born include Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Arthur Conan Doyle’s short stories, Astrid Lindgren’s Pipi Long Stocking, and Kipling’s Jungle Book. Born animated the first ever screen adaption of The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien in collaboration with Gene Deitch in 1966 and, in 1974, he won the Palma d’Oro at the International Festival of the Humor of Bordighera, in Italy. Adolf Born’s work has been exhibited throughout the world widely since the 1960s. He is also known for designing various theatre sets and costumes.
